Won’t lie. A small part of me was disappointed. Maybe that dangly thing on the frontal lobe of my brain. Or the hammer toe on my left foot. Whatever—the starry-eyed, ooey-gooey part of me was a nunchaku expert, hyped up on HGH, and getting some. For the next two months, Shannon and I would usually spend time outside of class and clubs in her room or mine making out. Sometimes we’d pass in the halls between classes and just smell the want off each other, and BAM! Duck around a corner or into a maintenance closet for a little action. Yes, badass Ryland wanted to hurl, but that hurl was made of rainbows and butterflies and smelled like honeysuckle and blackberries.

“I hate purple,” I said reading over the ingredients on the hair dye bottle. We were in the bathroom K and I shared in our suite of mutual hatred. Actually, hatred is a strong word for what my roommate and I had. Mutual ignorance was more like it. She had her world of Shawn Mendes, boxes of Quaker Chewy granola bars, and schoolwork. I had my s’mores-flavored pop tarts, Deep Space Nine box sets, and pretending to work on French while I was actually French kissing my girlfriend.

“Shit, you know what’s in this?” I said. “2,5-diaminotoluene? 4-aminophenol?”

“You forgot 5-amino-2-methylphenol,” said Shan.

“I’m not going to ask you how you know that by heart.”

“Good, because I’d have to kill you if you did.” This girl. My life. Shan turned around and pulled off her T-shirt. “Could you . . .”

Why, yes I could. My fingers worked diligently to unclasp her bra, which went limp around her arms. Shan pulled it off and suddenly seemed to shrink as she pressed her arms to her chest. The skin on her back was smooth, without blemishes, like she’d been factory made with a seal of approval. As close as we had become in the last months, we’d never been this intimate. I mean, hands were free to move places they needed to go when we were together. Good places. The right places. But at least we had the clothing barrier to keep things semi-legit, like I wasn’t really feeling like I was hovering off the ground all the time. If someone were to catch us right then . . .

Shan looked back with a pair of sultry eyes and mouthed, Towel. I complied without hesitation.

“Are you sure you wanna do this?” I said, wrapping a towel around her body. “I know girls who would kill to have your hair.” With her long platinum hair, Shan was all set up to be “discovered” by a modeling agency in downtown Los Angeles. She’d proceed onto her whirlwind life of yachts and high teas, of movie shoots and strange men offering her flowers while she waited at crosswalks.

“They can have it. It’s not me, anyway.”

“It’s your natural color, Shan. So in a way—”

She sat down on the side of the tub and swiveled her legs into it.

“No. Just do it.
